This course presents fundamental caregiving skills. The course covers anatomy and physiology of the body systems, the functions of the healthcare system, and gathering an individual’s information. Through a mix of lectures and laboratory time, students will gain hands-on experience in communication, providing care, taking vital signs, practicing safety procedures, recognizing individual rights and providing skills related to restorative care.

Course Objectives:

In this course students will:

  1. Demonstrate the basic skills of a caregiver.
  2. Describe the roles within teams, work units, departments, organizations, and interorganizational systems of healthcare.
  3. Apply fundamental medical terminology.
  4. Record vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate, pulse oxygenation, and pain levels.
  5. Demonstrate basic restorative skills of a caregiver.
  6. Demonstrate the process of assisting individuals with activities of daily living.
