Has Technology Changed the Medical Technologist Profession?

HealthcareNovember 21, 2018

From lugging around brick phones to answering calls on our watches, we don’t have to look very hard to see how far technology has come. While every industry has felt the effects, no sector has been more affected than healthcare. Technological advances lead to medical breakthroughs and discoveries, resulting in an ever-evolving healthcare industry.

However, while many things have changed some positions have stayed relatively the same. Medical Technologist (often called Lab Technicians) still perform the same life-saving duties as they’ve always done. These hidden heroes perform a wide range of tests that directly impact patient’s health; including pregnancy tests, monitoring drug therapy, testing for diseases such as diabetes, HIV, and cancer.

But how can an industry change yet jobs remain the same? Picture a photographer (no pun intended). Their job description hasn’t changed much since the dawn of photographs. The method and equipment they use, however, have drastically changed. From lugging around heavy film rolls to taking thousands of selfies of on our phones – we’re still taking photos of our surroundings, but the way we do it has changed –the same for medical technologists. They still perform many of the same tests in order to help physicians diagnose each  patient’s condition. Now, however, technology has advanced the speed with which results can be ascertained and shared with patients, and automation is making many tests easier to conduct.

In some ways, technology is making the medical technologist’s job easier. But, at the same time, technologists must take steps to ensure speed isn’t compromising results. Accurate test results will always be the reason why medical technologists do what they do.
