The Role of a Dental Hygienist

Dental Hygienists typically work in a Dentist’s office but also may work in schools, physicians’ offices and other medical locations. They work under a dentist’s supervision and are responsible for examining and maintaining patients’ oral health.

Their role consists of: using special types of tools to remove tartar, stains, and plaque from teeth, applying special medicines to help protect teeth, taking patients’ dental x-rays, documenting their treatment history and creating an oral health plan for them, as well as educating patients about oral health.

Dental Hygienists will wear safety equipment while working with patients to avoid the infectious spread of diseases. Among other pieces of equipment, this may include gloves, safety glasses, and surgical masks.

Becoming a Dental Hygienist

Formal education is required to become a dental hygienist. This includes obtaining an associate’s degree., or bachelor’s degree, which also is available, but less common. However, if a Dental Hygiene graduate wants to focus on research or teaching, a bachelor’s or master’s is required. Classes typically include learning about anatomy, nutrition, medical ethics, periodontics and much more.

For those desiring to become a dental hygienist, here are some important qualities that should be considered: being able to think critically and assessing situations; being compassionate as some patients have fears; being good at working with your hands, and paying close attention to details.

According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, the future for Dental Hygienists is bright with an expected job growth outlook of 19% through 2024, which is much faster than average.
