Outlook for Medical Billing and Coding
With the combination of our aging population and increased access to health insurance through federal healthcare reform, there will be added demand for medical billing and coding professionals. These medical professionals are critical to assist healthcare providers who will be dealing with increased patient encounters and medical chart reviews, which in turn will require employees skilled in medical billing and coding.
Work Environment for Medical Billing and Coding
Medical Billing Coders compile, process, and maintain medical records of patients in a professional manner consistent with various medical, legal, and regulatory requirements. They process, maintain, and report patient medical insurance information using the healthcare industry's numerical coding system. There are increasing complexities and changes in coding standards that contribute to a growing need for well-trained people to enter the medical billing and coding profession.
Program Overview for Fortis College Online Medical Billing and Coding
The Fortis Medical Billing and Coding Online program is a blended learning associate degree program that prepares students with a solid foundation of billing and coding knowledge and technological skills so that they can seek entry-level employment in the healthcare industry to work in physician’s offices, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, home health agencies or insurance offices. Principles of billing and coding include use of the CMS 1500 form, ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes, CPT codes, HIPAA confidentiality, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
The Fortis Medical Billing and Coding Online program is taught as a hybrid learning program. Students will take many courses online and other courses will be taken in a physical classroom at a campus. As a hybrid program, this offers Fortis Online students the best of both learning methods: the flexibility and convenience of online classes while still participating in a campus setting to get the value of a learning community experience. Online learning prepares students by building valuable computer skills and on-campus learning helps build a support network that helps to lead to success in the workplace.
The physical classroom at which the student will complete on-campus coursework is located at a local Fortis College or Institute campus that will be determined with the student during the admissions process for the Medical Billing and Coding Online program.
Through an externship course that is included in this program, students are provided with the opportunity to apply their billing and coding skills to real-life situations in a healthcare setting. The required externship hours and other related learning activities must be completed by students prior to graduation. Students are not paid for work performed at the externship site. In their final quarter in the program, students are eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association’s (NHA) Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam.
