What an HVAC Technician Does

Skilled TradesJanuary 24, 2017

HVAC-R technicians install, maintain and fix heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning systems that control the air in different types of buildings. Residential homes, schools, hospitals, office buildings and factories are among the buildings HVAC technicians may work on.

Working conditions for these skilled professionals often include very hot or very cold and cramped spaces because of the placement of many air systems that they must fix or install.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the duties of HVAC technicians typically include:

Following blueprints or design specifications to install or repair air systems;

  • Connecting systems to fuel water supply lines and air ducts;

  • Installing electrical wiring and controls;

  • Inspecting, testing and maintaining customers’ HVAC systems;

  • Replacing worn parts; and

  • Determining HVAC energy use and making recommendations about ways to improve system efficiency.

HVAC Technicians Training Requirements

Most employers prefer HVAC technicians who have received technical training or licenses. Their education includes being trained in all three areas – heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems. However, most HVAC technicians choose to strictly work on one of the three.

In addition, when working on these systems, HVAC technicians need to follow government regulations regarding conservation, recovery and recycling of refrigerants as well as proper disposal of fluids. Thus, formal training in the field is of high importance to ensure proper installation and maintenance of these complex systems.

Job Outlook of a HVAC Technician

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for HVAC technicians in 2015 was $45,110 per year, and the profession had a 14% job outlook growth through 2024, which is much faster than average. A career as a HVAC technician is projected to be a good one as the need to fix, install and maintain building air systems will be needed at some point in time.
