The thought of going to school is dismissed by some people, as they feel that they could not possibly afford it. This may not necessarily be the case. If you are interested in attending nursing school, it is a very possible option. There are a number of different resources available that make it possible to go to school at any age, and earn your degree. It takes a some time and paperwork, but it is well worth the effort that you will put in to it. Resources that are available include grants, scholarships, student, loans and work study programs.

Nursing Grants

A nursing grant is sometimes provided through a hospital for those who are eligible to attend nursing school. Nursing training may be done within the hospital, as opposed to within a classroom. Eligibility requirements generally apply to these nursing grants, which are often given based on a person's income level, disability, race or ethnicity. Other grants available include a Pell Grant, which is based on the need of the student, and a Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant. There are literally hundreds of grants to be given away to those who take the time to seek them out, and they do not have to be paid back. These grants, as well as scholarships, will be awarded to individuals on a first come, first serve basis.

Student Loans

Those wishing to attend nursing school without applying for a grant may take out a student loan. Many of these are available with low interest rates. A Stafford Loan and a Perkins Loan, with an approximate five percent interest rate, do not accumulate any interest until after graduation.

Work Study Programs

Work study programs offer students a job that is relevant to their field of study while paying them. This is a practical and helpful resource to those who need to continue to work while going to school.

Nursing Scholarships

There are many scholarships available for those who want to attend nursing school. A nursing scholarship is a desirable way to fund your schooling. Scholarships are similar to grant because they do not have to be paid back. Scholarships are generally given to those who have achieved a certain status or who have earned merit in some way. These scholarships are given to people by private donors. When applying for a scholarship, fill out as many as you can.
