Nurses Share Lessons Learned During COVID

NursingMay 04, 2021

Nurses have been serving on the frontlines of the war against COVID-19 since it began and continue to be heroes throughout the pandemic. From quickly assuming new responsibilities to being the sole source of support for patients unable to see their families, nurses stepped up and went above and beyond the call of duty.

With the vaccine rollout, the hope of a new normal is on the horizon. Yet, few nurses have been left unchanged by the experience. Looking back, they share the important lessons they learned as they weathered the global healthcare crisis.

Focus on what you can do

From new variants to limited supplies, there have been plenty of reasons to feel anxiety during the pandemic. The only way to cope with a situation of this magnitude is to not worry about what you can’t control and focus on what you can. Being able to make a positive difference is what keeps you going.

Communication is key

Constant changes in regulations and policies from state and federal agencies can be frustrating. And, with COVID-19 dominating news reports and new studies about the best course of treatment and protection being released, it can be hard to be sure you have the most current information. To follow correct protocol and procedures, open communication—and lots of it—is essential. Don’t be afraid to communicate and be sure to ask questions if you are unsure of a procedure or policy.

Be open to change

The job you were hired to do may not be the one that’s most needed today. Be willing to expand your capabilities and jump in to give a helping hand when needed. Additional training may be required. Instead of fearing the unknown, embrace the opportunity to grow and expand your skills and knowledge.

Show empathy

Stress runs high when fear is involved. From patients and concerned families to overworked colleagues, give as much grace to others as possible. Try to disconnect from taking things personally. Always try to assume that everyone is doing the best they can do.

Hug your loved ones

One of the saddest parts of the pandemic has been having to care for patients who cannot be with their family or loved ones. The experience has underscored the fact that life is fragile and can be fleeting. Don’t pass up the opportunity to tell people you care. Kindness can go a long way to building strong relationships.

At the core of a nurse’s job is caring for others, and today’s nurses more than proved their resilience and willingness to learn during the pandemic. There is no better time that right now to think about training for a career as a nurse.
