Fashion for Nurses On and Off the Job

NursingJanuary 28, 2014

Approximately twenty years ago, the professional nurse was required to wear a white nursing uniform, white stockings and clean white nursing shoes. Sneakers were not even allowed at this time. In many facilities, a nurse was also required to wear her hair up with it neatly tucked inside a nursing cap. Times have changed, and so has fashion for nurses. We have come a long way.

Now, nursing clothes are very relaxed. Scrubs are generally the required fashion for nurses. In some facilities, a certain color of scrubs is mandated for the nursing staff, while in other facilities, you are able to choose the color and style of scrubs that you wear. Closed toe shoes are required, but you can usually select the desired style and color of the shoe. Most individuals in the nursing profession choose sneakers. One thing is for sure: scrubs are quite comfortable.

With more styles than ever before to choose from, fashion for nurses can still become quite monotonous. A nurse must find some way to liven up her outfit in other ways, and accessories are a great way to accomplish this.

Here are some ways that you can add a little spice and still pull off a professional appearance when considering fashion for nurses:

Jewelry

There is no reason not to shine a bit. You can gain some individuality by wearing earrings and a watch. You will want to be somewhat subdued and not wear anything too large or dangly, though. A small pair of hoops or a pair of sparkling birthstone earrings are perfect for on the job. A watch can be pretty much whatever you want it to be except for the fact that if it's too loose, it may tend to get hung up on things. A watch with a second hand is ideal, as a nurse will use this when she is taking a patient's vital signs.

Make Up

Less is more in the makeup department. A light dusting of blush on the cheekbones, a coat of mascara on the eyelashes and a faint coat of lip color will add a finishing touch to your style.

Hair Accessories

The most practical hairstyle for a nurse is neat, clean and out-of-the-way. The job of a nurse takes her through many situations. For most of these scenarios, she needs to have her hair off her face.

When you get home from your nursing job, you are going to want to get rid of the nurse outfit and put on some normal clothes.

Some ways to feel stylish out of your every day nurse fashion include:

Jeans and a loose fitting sweater with some stylish boots

Casual pants, a button down top and a pair of pumps

A designer style with some high heels and a nice handbag are perfect for a night out on the town.

Fashion for nurses has taken a huge step in the quest for comfort and style, which has relieved many nurses. A nurse outfit can now be more individualized, and nurses are enjoying this evolution.
