Eight Perfect Songs for the Nursing Profession

NursingJanuary 03, 2014

They say music tames the savage beast, but sometimes it also helps those of you in the nursing profession get through a tough shift, or reminds you of the difference you make in your patients' lives. Whether you want to blow off some steam or lift your own spirits, here are a few songs you may relate to on any given day.

The Ramones: "I Wanna Be Sedated"

Are your patients driving you crazy today? Sometimes, this song applies to you as well as to them. If you're going through a bad day or struggling to make it through those last few hours before a vacation, this song will lift your spirits and give you that last boost of energy before you finally clock out. Kind of ironic, isn't it?

The Beatles: "Help!"

You need somebody, not just anybody? Like the previous song, you may be singing this one as much as your patients at times. The nursing profession is tough, so you have to help each other when you're feeling down.

The Police: "Every Breath You Take"

"Every breath you take, every move you make, every bond you break, every step you take, I'll be watching you." It might sound a little like professional stalking, but nurses are watching every breath you take, sometimes literally.

Sarah McLachlan: "Angel"

As a nurse, you may beat yourself up after a rough day of trying to be the perfect "angel of mercy" for everyone else. But you also need to spend some time in self reflection, and find the angel within.

R.E.M.: "Everybody Hurts"

This song reminds you of the common ground all people share: our painful moments. These moments shall pass if you hold on a little longer, and have a good nurse to help you through it.

Donna Summer: "She Works Hard for the Money"

Sure, the number of men in the nursing profession grows every day, but it's still mostly women working as nurses. This anthem for working women reminds you that you're not alone in your struggle.

Destiny's Child: "Survivor"

Take that sisterhood of struggle and amp it up about 100 times for this rally cry. This is one song that you and your patients can relate to, and one that works for the male nurses on your unit as well.

The Jackson Five: "I'll Be There"

If you have one of those days where you wonder if you really make a difference in the lives of your patients, use this to remind yourself that yes, you most certainly do. Mariah Carey did an amazing cover of this song in 1992 with Trey Lorenz on backing vocals that will give you the chills.

Add a few of these songs to your MP3 player and indulge in a little music therapy on your break or your work commute. After all, a nurse can use a little TLC too.
