NursingNovember 13, 2013

Before you begin your studies for any type of career, you should take the proper steps to ensure that it's right for you. When choosing a nursing career, you should research exactly what a nurse does and what type of nursing you want to study. A career in nursing can lead you down many roads with numerous employment options available upon completion of school. As noted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, students completing associate degree programs can become registered nurses while careers as licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses are available to students who have earned a post secondary non-degree award.  A nursing career is very challenging and requires a great deal of hard work and dedication. The emotional rewards that you gain within this profession may be numerous as you have the opportunity to care for others who are in need.

Here are three things to consider before choosing a nursing career:

  • Responsibility: As with any career, you are accountable for your own actions. The life of a nurse is no different. There is additional pressure on nurses, for they are are accountable for other peoples lives and the care associated with that patient is a major responsibility.
  • Schedule: A nurse's schedule is can be chaotic. A nurse can work long hours or work per diem. You are able to choose how much or how little you want to work. A nurse may be in high demand to cover shifts for those who are not available. If you would like more work hours, they will likely be available to you.
  • Course of study: Think about what type of nursing you would like to study. If you want to specialize in a particular area, find out which courses would be most helpful to you. Think about your long term goals and plan ahead for them. Do you want to earn an associate's degree, which involves going to school for only two years, or do you plan on earning your bachelor's degree with a four year program?

Several nursing programs can provide you with the skills that you need in choosing a nursing career. Planning ahead and choosing the best nursing program for you is the first step in your new journey.
