ACEN Accreditation for Fortis Nursing Programs in Florida

NursingOctober 17, 2019

With such a wide range of nursing programs available, it can be challenging to choose a school that fits your needs and that provides a quality, accredited education. Recently, all nursing programs offering pre-licensure associate degree education are mandated by the Florida Board of Nursing to attain accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). This is an effort to make sure all programs are consistent and offers quality courses. If you are looking to pursue a nursing education in the state of Florida, below are some important points to know about ACEN accreditation:

What is ACEN accreditation?

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) is a nationally recognized, programmatic accrediting agency for nursing education programs (clinical doctorate, master’s degree, baccalaureate degree, associate degree, diploma, associate degree in nursing and practical nursing program).

ACEN accreditation is granted after a two-year review process that includes a self-study document and a site visit. The results are then reviewed by a panel of experts from the accrediting agency.

Who is ACEN accredited?

The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program at all four Florida-based Fortis campuses has received programmatic accreditation by ACEN: Fortis College in Cutler Bay, Fortis College in Orange Park, Fortis Institute in Pensacola and Fortis Institute in Port St. Lucie.  In addition, the ADN programs at Fortis College in Centerville, OH; and Fortis College in Salt Lake City, UT are accredited by ACEN.

Why is Accreditation important?

Accreditation requires all nursing graduates to be educated at the same level which, in turn, ensures patients receive the same level of care no matter where they live. Additionally, most institutions offering advanced nursing degrees will only accept credits from applying students who received their degree from ACEN accredited institutions.

As one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S., Fortis has enrolled more than 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates more than 15 nursing campuses in 8 states. For more information about Fortis nursing programs, visit https://www.fortis.edu/programs/nursing.html.
