You are interested in being a dental hygienist, but want to know more about the perks of the profession – then who better to ask than a pro?
Fortis College Dental Hygiene Program Director Melinda Monteiro loves witnessing her dental hygiene students succeed. She shares her real-life experiences with them, in the clinic and in the classroom, as both director and an instructor.
If you are considering a career as a dental hygienist, Director Monteiro has shared some of her wisdom (teeth) on why she and her students love their careers:
“I love helping patients save their teeth, boosting their confidence and improving their overall health,” says Monteiro. “Drawing attention to a patient’s oral health can truly enhance their quality of life.”
Many hygienists love the flexibility the profession affords, working full-time or part-time. They enjoy the benefits of having nights and weekends free which leaves room for passion projects and hobbies during their off hours.
“I love the opportunity to build a rapport with patients so we can better educate them on oral health,” she says.
Dental hygienists go through rigorous schooling and testing to prepare to take the test to become licensed. This gives them a sense of job satisfaction that many people who earn a traditional liberal arts education may not achieve. Training to become a dental hygienist is much more than just earning a college degree.
“The program is extremely demanding,” says Monteiro. “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to their studies and patients – but it all leads to a rewarding and wonderful career.”
