FORTIS INSTITUTE DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM EARNS FULL CODA ACCREDITATION

Tuesday, August 19, 2014 3:04 PM

The Fortis Institute in Scranton’s Dental Hygiene Program has been granted full accreditation without recommendations through 2019 by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

The Scranton campus’ Dental Hygiene, Associate in Specialized Technology Degree program was launched in 2010, following a grant of initial accreditation. The program recently underwent an extensive accreditation self-study and visit from CODA in order to earn its full accreditation.

“Students and staff are extremely pleased with the outcome of the visit. To receive full accreditation without recommendations indicates our program meets or exceeds all accreditation guidelines,” said campus Dental Programs Director Laura Sleeper, RDH, MS. Accreditation is a requirement for students to sit for their Regional and National Boards and to work in the field.

Fortis Institute in Scranton’s program has graduated two cohorts of students and boasts a 100% pass rate for the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners, Inc. (NERB) and a 90% pass rate for the National Boards. Upon graduation, Fortis Institute dental hygienists can perform local anesthesia and take radiographs as necessary, in additional to all dental hygiene duties.

“The campus wishes to express sincere ‘thanks’ to our Dental Program Advisory Committee members, dental hygiene instructors, and students enrolled in the program for their input and assistance in bringing this accomplishment to fruition,” President Madeline Levy Cruz added.

Established in 1975, the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) is nationally recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) as the sole agency to accredit dental and dental-related education programs conducted at the post-secondary level.
