FORTIS Programs

Fortis College in Mobile, AL: Emergency Medical Technician

Through the FORTIS EMT Training Program at our Mobile campus, you will learn to properly assess, manage and transport patients at a Basic Life Support level of competence of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Emergency Medical Technicians are the first responders of our emergency medical system. They care for and transport the seriously injured and ill to hospitals and trauma centers. This 15-week EMT training program focuses on developing the emergency skills necessary to assess a patient’s condition and to manage respiratory, cardiac, and trauma emergencies. Quick and level-headed reactions to life or death situations are required.

As our population continues to age the number of emergency medical calls requiring an EMT to respond will continue to rise. In addition, hospitals now often specialize in treating a particular illness or injury, so there are more patient transfers between hospitals to get patients to medical providers best able to treat them. Since most patients must be transferred by ambulance, this means an increased level of demand for the services of EMTs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports employment for EMTs and paramedics is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2022.* Job prospects should be good nationally, particularly with municipalities and private ambulance services.

Once the short-term program is completed, graduates will be able to sit for the EMT-National Registry Exam and to register with the Alabama Department of Public Health as an EMT. Once licensed, a graduate will be qualified to seek entry-level positions as an EMT. Programs vary by state and campus. Not all programs are offered at all locations. Contact local campus for accreditation information.

This program is not eligible for federal financial aid programs.
