Formerly known as Tri-State Institute, the FORTIS Institute campus in Birmingham, Alabama, provides career education to the greater Birmingham area for the nursing, healthcare, medical, dental and skilled trades fields. Mission & Objectives

FORTIS Institute provides postsecondary career education to both traditional and nontraditional students through a variety of degree and diploma programs that assist students in enhancing their career opportunities and improving problem-solving abilities.  FORTIS strives to develop within its students the desire for lifelong and continued education, and believes that it makes an important contribution to the economic growth and social well-being of the Birmingham metropolitan area. 

The following goals are integral to the mission of the Institute:

  • To offer sound diploma and degree programs.
  • To develop each student’s individual and professional growth, including written and interpersonal communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving competencies.
  • To attract and retain qualified instructors who are effective in the classroom and familiar with appropriate current medical, and/or technical practices.
  • To develop in students a professional attitude and an awareness of contemporary career practices through exposure to pragmatic course content and to faculty currently engaged in enterprise.
  • To assist graduates in finding positions for which they are trained.

Fortis Institute Birmingham campus offers training recognized by the American Heart Association to people in Alabama and the greater Birmingham metro area in a wide variety of continuing education courses that also include certification for Phlebotomy and EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant.

Continuing Education courses offered at Fortis Institute in Birmingham:

  • 12 Lead EKG Course
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
    ACLS is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS)
    This course is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.
  • EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification
    Section 608 of the "Clean Air Act" has required mandatory certification for all technicians working on stationary air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Phlebotomy Certification
    Phlebotomists specialize in collecting blood samples and are trained to work with infectious specimens. A Phlebotomist is also called a Clinical Laboratory Technician. They may prepare specimens and operate automated analyzers, for example, or they may perform manual tests in accordance with detailed instructions.
