What You'll Learn

Fortis Institute in Scranton provides the following practical nurse training:

PRACTICAL NURSING (PN)

The Fortis nursing curriculum provides the knowledge and skills to prepare students to sit for the NCLEX licensure exam and pursue a career as an entry-level licensed practical nurse (LPN) in a variety of clinical and hospital settings upon passing their licensure exam after graduation.

This is a hybrid program, which means that the majority of the program is taken at the campus and several courses within the program (less than 50% of the program) are taken online. The program’s blend of on-campus and online courses allows students to experience all the support and services our school has to offer as well the flexibility and convenience of online classes.*

* The number of classes taken online varies each term, and some terms in the program may be taught entirely on campus. Speak to one of our admissions representatives for more information.

Success Stories

See what our graduates are saying about Nursing at Fortis

Carrie F., Practical Nursing

I chose Fortis because it felt like home to me.  Ever since I walked through the doors they were great in human resources, great with financial aid; it was just the whole entity of the entire program and then once I walked through the doors of the nursing program it literally just felt like home and it’s where I wanted to be.

I strongly encourage anyone seeking self-improvement and career enhancement to enroll in Fortis College. The programs they offer integrate the talent, knowledge, and skills of top-quality instructors, as well as, a diverse group of highly motivated students who are preparing for rewarding careers. Thanks to Fortis College, I now have the “real world” experience necessary to lead a successful career! I am a practical nursing graduate holding down two LPN jobs now and back in school with Fortis to complete my Associates of Registered Nursing.

Ruth W., Practical Nursing

I attended the Fortis College in Norfolk and received my LPN certification and returned for my RN degree. What brought me back for RN was the quality of the instructors. My schedule was hectic during the day at that time, they had night courses so I was taking the evening LPN courses and that worked really, really well for me.

LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSING

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) are in demand. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 5% increase in employment for LPNs by 2032, which is faster than the average for all occupations.

What's driving this demand? Approximately 193,100 openings for registered nurses are projected each year due to nurses exiting the workforce. Responsibilities for an RN can vary by state, but typically include:

  • Monitoring patient health by recording vital signs, symptoms, and reactions to treatments and providing essential data for RNs and physicians
  • Assisting with patient hygiene, comfort, and daily living needs to ensure a high level of care and improve patient outcomes
  • Administering basic nursing care, including changing bandages, performing standard laboratory tests, and administering prescribed medications under the supervision of an RN or physician
  • Facilitating communication between patients, family members, and the healthcare team to ensure that patient care plans are understood and followed
