Calling All Skilled Trades Workers

Born and raised in Baltimore, Mike Rowe believes in the value of hard work. He’s also a champion of skilled trades, saying America is headed toward a potentially crippling shortfall in people trained to do the jobs four-year college graduates can’t, or won’t, do. He believes so profoundly in the issue that he created a foundation to help support those with a thirst for skilled training.

He’s talking about jobs like plumbing, HVAC, welding, electrical and construction. Jobs that require both mental acuity and hands-on abilities, such as those just referenced, but are critical to our way of life. Jobs that too many people consider “blue collar,” but still need doing if America is to remain a worldwide leader in economic growth.

These are jobs and careers that can be as rewarding financially as they are on a personal level…knowing you’re doing something for others that they need done, but can’t do for themselves.

These are careers that schools like Fortis can prepare you to enter and be successful doing. Not only does Fortis offer an education and hands-on training is such fields as HVAC/R (Heating, Ventilation , Air Conditioning & Refrigeration), Welding, Electric Systems Technician, Electrical Trades and Construction Management at more than two-dozen campuses across the country, Rowe’s Foundation can help pay your way to your new career.

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation gives away “a free pile of money” to those with a strong work ethic and a willingness to get his, or her, hands a little dirty. Rowe’s Work Ethic Scholarship Program provides assistance to students who have a passion to be trained for jobs that “actually exist” and can’t be shipped overseas.

To date, the Foundation provided more than $3 million in education at trade schools all across the country. How do you claim your share? Well, you’ll have to sign the S.W.E.A.T. (Skill & Work Ethic Aren’t Taboo) Pledge, provide two references…boss, teacher, superior – but no relatives – write an essay and answer a few, brief questions, and make a video of yourself. Go to Profoundly Disconnected for more information.

And, when you’re ready to become a workplace “hero,” consider letting Fortis help pave the pathway to success. Visit our Skilled Trades page to learn more.
