How Attending a Nursing Convention Can Benefit Your Career

NursingMay 08, 2014

Nursing education does not end with the completion of a degree. Nurses continuously learn new skills on the job, but sometimes you may need to branch out to grow in your career. A nursing convention can help you stay up-to-date with the latest research, network with other nurses and learn new practice strategies. If you are a radiology nurse, consider attending the 33 rd annual Spring Convention of the Association for Radiologic & Imaging Nursing (ARIN), which takes place March 23 to 26, 2014, in San Diego, CA.

Conference Events

The event is held in conjunction with the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Convention and the Association of Vascular and Interventional Radiographers conference. The theme this year is "Collaboration & Communication: Bridge to the Future," and some of the sessions are shared between the different conferences so that attendees can learn from these related disciplines.

The nursing convention will include presentations on patient safety and care, the future of the US health care system, specific radiologic issues and inspirational sessions dedicated to communication and teamwork skills. The combination of topics can help grow your clinical knowledge as well as improve interactions with both patients and coworkers.

There also will be various opportunities for networking, such as welcome receptions and an orientation for first-time attendees. You can also attend the SIR expo, where you can see the latest medical devices and participate in interactive learning opportunities.

How to Attend

If you are convinced that this conference will be beneficial for you, but are concerned that your supervisor may not agree to cover your attendance, the conference brochure offers a detailed guide on how to convince her or him. The guide describes how attending the event can benefit both a radiologic nurse and the workplace, and it includes a prepared letter describing some of these advantages.

ARIN also offers an optional two-day imaging course that will take place prior to the convention on March 21 and 22. Participants receive continuing education credit and can attend without registering for the nursing convention.

You can sign up for these events on SIR's website at www.sirmeeting.org. While you can book your own hotel stay, the organization also offers group rates for hotel rooms at several local hotels, including the San Diego Marriott Marquis and Marina, host of the ARIN conference.
