Military Leads the Way to Trained Surgical Technologists

Few outside the surgical technology profession know that surgical technology originated in the military. The advent of World War II and the number of servicemen requiring treatment in field hospitals brought to light the need for specially trained personnel whose primary purpose was to assist during surgery on those wounded in battle.

Fast forward to today. Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have produced a significant number of military trained surgical technologists who are now re-entering the civilian sector. These same heroes, who are highly trained and experienced from their military service, had been ineligible to sit for the national Certified Surgical Technologist certification required for a surgical technologist position in a civilian hospital. Well no more! That inequity has been addressed by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), as well as the National Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).  Recently, NBTSA and AST unanimously approved a change that lets military trained surgical technologists take the Certified Surgical Technologist exam based solely on their military training and service.

Fortis College supports and salutes this overdue action. It assures qualified veterans that they now can and will be able to apply their military training and experience to a civilian position in Surgical Technology. Fortis campuses can provide trained veterans with guidance, advice, and recommendations on how to apply and prepare for the Certified Surgical Technologist exam. Veterans wishing to sit for the CST exam may contact one of our surgical technology programs and speak with a director or faculty member trained in the most recent exam and application requirements. We also offer information on the process for military veterans to obtain their CST, review textbooks they can order, cost of the exam, and the nearest testing facility. Fortis Colleges and Institutes are here not only to help their students, they are committed to helping each community’s veterans as well.
