Top Two Medical Billing and Coding Platforms

HealthcareNovember 15, 2014

The field of medical billing and coding has come a long way since the early years of medicine. There are many software platforms and manuals available to professionals working within the medical field. This article focuses on two in particular, ICD-9-CM and CPT, which are two of the main platforms for all students to learn when obtaining this degree. Medical coding is a specialized language that is used to communicate medical billing. These codes come in all kinds of forms. With that being said, you can understand the intensity of this degree program. The codes themselves can become quite expansive, but knowing how to differentiate between them is crucial to one's success. Let's take a look at ICD-9-CM and CPT and examine the differences. ICD-9-CM stands for The International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification. Simply put, this is the highly technological way of assigning numbers to accommodate the common ailments that may occur in one's life. ICE-9-CM stems from detailing the condition of the patient upon being seen at the hospital or doctor's office. The Current Procedural Terminology, CPT, stands for the code used to describe medical services and procedures performed by doctors for a diagnosis. Unlike ICD-9-CM, it is based more on procedure, as opposed to the actual condition of the patient. Maintained by the American Medical Association, CPT is monitored and adjusted to reflect changes in practice and technology within the medical field. Medical jargon can be quite a tricky concept to someone who hasn't had the proper training. That is why it is essential to be well versed in and have a strong understanding of both CPT and ICD-9-CM. All in all, an online medical billing and coding degree plays an important role in today's society. These codes are the most widely accepted medical codes used to report medical procedures and services under public and private health insurance programs. It takes both of these codes to successfully complete the job. Receiving all the training necessary in learning about both of these platforms will only exceed the coder's ability to thrive in the workforce. Photo Source: Flickr [cf]skyword_tracking_tag[/cf]
