What Certifications Does a Massage Therapist Need?

General EducationSeptember 20, 2016

Massage therapists are certified professionals who use touch to ease a variety of ailments, including muscular spasms, pain, stiffness and poor circulation throughout the body. Among other healing techniques, in combination with essential oils and lotions, massage therapists help reduce stress and increase relaxation.

After completing several courses and receiving a license and/or certifications, massage therapists can find work in a variety of locations, including physician/chiropractic offices, day spas, hotels and resorts, client residences and fitness centers, among others.

Massage therapy is a growing field. The American Massage Therapy Association estimates the number of massage therapists in the United States (including students) is between 300,000 and 340,000. However, the United States Department of Labor projects significant industry growth over the next decade. In fact, the USDL believes employment of massage therapists will increase 22 percent by 2024.

Earning Massage Therapist Certifications

While regulations vary by state, most states require massage therapists to have obtained a high school diploma (or equivalent) and graduated from an approved massage therapy program.

Additionally, students must complete anywhere from 500 to 1,000 hours of combined classroom and hands-on experience. The typical courses offered in the Fortis massage therapy programs are designed to educate students about safety precautions, ethics, human anatomy and pathology, as well as the correct way to massage clients while avoiding injury and overuse of their hands.

Most states also require students to pass a state-specific and/or other type of exam. Prior to receiving a massage license, students may have to pass the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx), offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards.

In addition to these requirements, students usually have to be certified to perform CPR, pass a background check and obtain liability insurance.
