Preparing for the New Year

General EducationJanuary 18, 2018

For most of us, the New Year is a time to assess goals and potential changes in our lives. Many New Year’s resolutions center around changing or enhancing work-related tasks – maybe even preparing for new careers.

For those of you considering a job switch in 2018, we offer a few tips on setting career goals for the New Year. First – review your work, volunteer, extracurricular and academic history to see what interests you most or you find most enjoyable. Wikihow suggests examining all skill sets…not just those from your work because new careers sometimes are based on things you’ve done well in the past, even if you weren’t paid for it then.

It’s also a good idea to thoroughly research your career options before making a decision. The Balance suggests reading about two new career options each week and taking notes about how interesting they are to you. If you find one that’s especially appealing, it’s also a good idea to make a list of questions to help guide your research into that career.

There are those who say resolutions should be long-term – maybe not even for 2018…but for 2019. Psychologist Benjamin Hardy is one who believes long-term goals are most likely to be achieved because they require planning. “Don’t just plant a tree, plant an orchard,” he suggests.

If a career change is in order, additional schooling may be needed to write your ticket to success. Review the offerings at local colleges and career schools to find the one that most closely matches your career interests and current resources. You don’t necessarily need a four-year degree or prestigious college education to be successful.

Fortis Colleges and Institutes offer career-oriented programs that prepare students for several of The College Board’s list of Top 10 Most In-Demand jobs requiring a two-year degree or less, such as Registered Nurses (#1), Practical & Vocational Nurses (#3), Computer Support Specialists (#4), Hair Stylists & Cosmetologists (#5) and HVAC Technicians (#9). Visit our Programs page to learn more about your options and which campuses offer the education and training you need for your career choice.

And, if you agree that you should approach your decision by thinking long-term, it may be time to go out a buy a 2019 diary!
