How To Set Professional Goals for 2018

OK, January is now behind us but there are still many more months in the year. There’s still time to set some career goals for 2018, and there is no reason why it can’t be an amazing year for you, career-wise.

Studies show that people who set goals typically are more productive. Goals help identify what you want and how you’re going to get there. But, where should you start when you want to set your own professional goals?

First step is to clear your mind of everything else and then set aside the time to your list.  Once that is done, then grab a pen and paper and start writing. Writing down your plans holds you more accountable and generally leads to more success.

Basically, you’ll need to create a roadmap of where you want to be, come December 31st…and what paths or activities will get you there. Here are seven good tips for getting started:

1.     Be specific – define exactly what you believe it will take to make you successful, i.e., earning a good wage in order to support your family.

2.     Make your goals both measurable (so you know you’ve reached them) and motivational (so you’ll be inspired to keep moving forward).

3.     Keep your goals realistic. If what you want isn’t within your abilities and skills to attain, it’s not a goal…but a dream.

4.     Set a timeline – you need a realistic date to keep yourself focused and engaged.

5.     Make an action plan. This will outline the steps you need to take to achieve your goal.

6.     Be flexible – often you’ll encounter an unforeseen obstacle. If you have to adjust your timeline or roadmap, don’t be afraid to do so.

7.     Write it down. We can’t emphasize that element enough. Writing goals down on paper helps you see them as “real” and lets you get your arms around them. Just be sure they’re written in positive terms: “I will accomplish (whatever you decide) by (date).”

The important thing is to view your goals as part of your professional development.

And, if that professional development means going to school to hone or learn new skills, Fortis Colleges and Institutes offer a variety of programs…from nursing to information technology and from healthcare to the hands-on skilled trades such as welding and HVAC…that can help get you there.
