FORTIS INSTITUTE EMBRACES COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Electrical Team from Forty Fort Campus to Wire Edwardsville Habitat for Humanity Home Tuesday, August 19, 2014 1:15 PM

Fortis Institute in Forty Fort is partnering with Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity to help an Edwardsville, Pa., family achieve the dream of home ownership.

Beginning on Monday, Aug. 18, a team of Electrical Trades program faculty and students will be installing the wiring on an under-construction Habitat for Humanity home. Under the supervision of Electrical Trades Director Richard Zawatsky and instructor John Dorman, 13 Fortis students will be wiring the home for electricity from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Aug. 18, 19 and 20.

The project is taking place at 86 Green Street, Edwardsville, PA, and will be Fortis Institute’s first community-based outreach in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. “Habitat for Humanity does a great job of addressing the need for affordable housing. We are privileged to partner with the Wyoming Valley Habit on this community effort,” said Fortis Institute electrical instructor John Dorman. “It’s a win-win initiative for our students, who benefit from gaining hands-on experience while performing a worthwhile community service.”

Habitat for Humanity homes are a hand up, not a hand out. Habitat families are selected based on level of need, willingness to become partners in the Habitat program, and ability to repay a 20-year, no interest mortgage. Families who purchase Habitat homes must invest at least 300 hours of “sweat equity” volunteer labor on the construction and finishing of their homes.

Established in 1992, Wyoming Valley Habitat for Humanity is marking its 22nd year of outreach to the local community.
