Fortis College in Houston has been preparing students for careers in health care since 1991. The campus now has expanded its career education options to include skilled trades with a new Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R) program.
Fortis College-Houston currently is enrolling students for career training in HVAC with classes starting soon. Additional program starts will occur regularly throughout the year.
Skilled HVAC technicians are critical to maintain and repair today’s energy efficient systems. Technicians work in homes, hospitals, office buildings, factories – anywhere there is climate-control equipment that needs to be installed, repaired, or serviced.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (Jan. 8, 2014), with much faster than average job growth and numerous expected retirements across the nation, skilled HVAC mechanics and installers should have excellent employment opportunities as employers continue to have difficulty finding qualified technicians to work on complex new systems.
Fortis College students will take a range of classes, from Introduction of Craft Skills and Electricity Essentials to Advanced Air Conditioning, HVAC System Design and EPA Certification Preparation, and become adept at using a variety of tools to work with heating and cooling components, refrigerant lines and air ducts. In just over one year, graduates can be qualified for entry-level work in both residential and commercial sites.
“Our campus facilities are designed to stimulate learning and provide hands-on experience under the direction of experienced professionals so our graduates will have the HVAC skill set to reach their full potential, both professionally and personally,” says campus President Sidney Carey.
Carey adds the Fortis College-Houston campus environment is a bridge to success for students that reinforces “The Fortis Difference,” a measurable approach to providing students the highest quality education experience.
