FORTIS COLLEGE, PHOENIX TO DEDICATE NEW DENTAL HYGIENE CLINIC

Event Recognizes Homeless Adolescent Youth & National Children’s Dental Health Month Tuesday, August 19, 2014 1:27 PM

WHAT:Fortis College, Phoenix will host a ribbon cutting ceremony, facility tours and community health fair to formally dedicate its new dental hygiene clinic. The event marks the observance of February as National Children’s Dental Health Month and celebrates the clinic’s participation in a dental health outreach program to raise awareness regarding the oral health needs of vulnerable and homeless youth through a partnering project with Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development.

WHO:Arizona Department of Health Services Assistant Director of Prevention Services, Sheila Sjolander; Julia Wacloff, Arizona Department of Health Services Chief of Oral Health; Dr. Kirsten Rolings, Director of Maricopa County Office of Oral Health; Dr. Donald Altman, Director, Public Health and Research for the School of Health Management and Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health; among others, will join Campus President Glen Tharp for the ribbon-cutting and celebration.

WHEN: Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, 3-5 p.m. – Grand Opening Reception (Reception is an invitation event; organizations interested in learning about low-cost dental hygiene options for their clients are welcome to attend.)

Saturday, February 1, 2014, 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. – Community Health Fair, featuring no-charge children’s dental screenings and referrals, oral cancer screenings, and blood pressure/blood sugar screenings, along with former NBA Phoenix Suns star Cedric Ceballos as the guest DJ, face painting, balloon animals, and prize giveaways. The Health Fair is open to the public at no charge.

WHY: The Fortis College, Phoenix dental clinic provides dental care to the public, offering oral screenings, full x-rays and thorough teeth cleaning to persons in need – from young children to seniors. Fortis College also works with Wesley Neighborhood Clinic, Tumbleweeds Center for Youth Development and other organizations to ensure everyone has access to preventive dental care.

The campus dental clinic is open three-days a week (Mon-Wed) from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., and plans to operate four days a week (8 a.m. – 9 p.m.) as new dental classes begin.
