The Associate of Applied Science degree in Health Information Technology/Management (HIT/HIM) program at the Ravenna, Ohio campus receives CAHIIM accreditation for RHIT certification. Tuesday, August 19, 2014 3:19 PM

Fortis College in Ravenna, Ohio is one of just a handful of colleges in the State of Ohio accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM). As a result, graduates from the school’s Associate of Applied Science Degree Health Information Technology program are trained to take the certification test for Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT).

This is important for business and communities in northeastern Ohio because federal guidelines go into effect next year (2014) mandating that medical facilities accepting Medicare patients employ health information technology managers with either certification as an RHIT or an RHIA.

Health Information Technology/Management (HIT/HIM) is a system for managing health information such as electronic health records, electronic medical recordkeeping, coding and billing system, and other patient/medical facility data used by all medically oriented organizations, such as hospitals, physicians’ offices, medical billing companies, insurance firms, etc. Health Information Management enables medical entities to monitor patient care, including the ability to properly code, bill and receive payment for services rendered.

For existing health care workers who need advanced HIT/HIM training, or individuals in search of emerging career opportunities, Fortis College in Ravenna offers the programs and the accreditation necessary to achieve their career goals.
To help meet the federal mandate, Ohio is in the process of setting aside funds to help employers re-educate their incumbent workforce through the new Incumbent Workforce Training Act. To learn more about the program and available funding options, individuals and employers may contact the State of Ohio for information about the Incumbent Workforce Training Act funds and when funds are expected to be available.

Employers or community residents seeking a new career field with long term career potential also may visit or call an admissions representative at Fortis College in Ravenna at 330-297-7319 for consumer disclosure information about the program.

Previously Bohecker College, Fortis College has been part of the Ravenna community since 1922. Through the years, the Ravenna campus has introduced improved methods of teaching as well as industry-standard equipment and materials. Its standards of excellence, constant updating of courses to meet trends and developments in business and industry, outstanding faculty, and a keen personal interest in its students have enabled the college to maintain a place of high regard within the community.
