Fortis College in Cincinnati Now Offers Training for Careers in Professional Trades

FORTIS COLLEGE IN CINCINNATI, RECOGNIZED FOR HEALTHCARE PROGRAMS, NOW HAS COURSE OFFERINGS FOR ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN AND HEATING, VENTILATION, AIR CONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION SPECIALIST. Thursday, July 26, 2012 12:29 PM

October 26, 2010 -- CINCINNATI, Ohio

Fortis College, a leading healthcare post-secondary education institution in Cincinnati, has begun preparing students for in-demand trade careers. The campus now offers programs in Electrical System Technician (EST) and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) professions.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of electrical systems installers and repair professionals is expected to grow. As equipment becomes more sophisticated, many businesses may turn to automation to reduce expenses, placing a premium upon qualified installers and repair persons to get equipment up and running and to keep it operating efficiently.

The BLS also reports HVACR professionals should have excellent job opportunities into the foreseeable future, with growth as high as 28% through 2018. Residential HVACR systems typically are replaced every 10 to 15 years and systems in homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s should enter the replacement cycle in the next 10 years. Additionally, as more attention is focused on improved indoor air quality and the increased use of refrigerated equipment by the growing number of stores selling perishables, demand for specialists is expected to rise.

Skills in which Fortis College EST and HVACR students will be thoroughly schooled.

“Our courses will be taught by industry experts and will include a strong emphasis on extensive practical experience sessions so our graduates are trained to step into any given situation with appropriate skills and the confidence to use them,” Campus Director Phyllis Forney said.

Students in the EST program will explore how electronics theory is applied in the electrical field while electronic devices commonly found in residential and commercial applications. Through classroom presentation and lab exercises, they will focus on low voltage wiring applications that include audio, video, security, telephone, computer networking and wireless systems in accordance with National Electrical Code requirements.

The HVACR program will prepare students for entry-level employment as an HVACR technician, both as installers and mechanical repair specialists. The program includes a phase in computerized diagnostics that encompasses commercial refrigeration, gas heat, heat pumps and air conditioning in order to maintain a health, comfortable environment in all types of buildings.

The Fortis College Cincinnati campus will offer its Electrical Systems Technician and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration programs at both day and evening classes. Enrollment is underway for the next class that begins Nov. 29, with additional class starts at regular intervals throughout the year. For information, call 513-771-2795.
